PROFESSIONAL TRAINING

Professional Protection Through Preparation

Introduction

Violence is unpredictable, dynamic, and rarely unfolds according to a predetermined script. Effective defensive tactics training must prepare individuals and organizations to respond to rapidly changing circumstances while maintaining focus on the mission, the environment, and the desired outcome.

Vigilance Protection Group & Security Consulting provides professional defensive tactics instruction through Modern Combative Concepts (MCC), a comprehensive, modular training system developed to meet the operational requirements of security professionals, law enforcement agencies, corrections personnel, executive protection teams, military organizations, healthcare professionals, educational institutions, and private citizens.

Unlike traditional training programs that rely upon rigid curricula or sport-based methodologies, Modern Combative Concepts is built around a simple philosophy: tactics support strategies, and strategies support the mission objective.Rather than forcing every student through the same program, training is tailored to the individual client, allowing each course to address specific operational environments, responsibilities, threats, and objectives.

Every training program is constructed using individual modules that can be integrated into a comprehensive system or delivered independently to strengthen a particular capability. This approach ensures that training remains relevant to the client's mission while providing a structured pathway for continued development.

Instructor Biography and Professional Background

Patrick Edward Odle is the founder and lead instructor of Vigilance Protection Group & Security Consulting and the creator of Modern Combative Concepts, a defensive tactics system developed through decades of martial arts training, professional instruction, executive protection operations, security consulting, law enforcement collaboration, and international humanitarian work.

As the Chief of Security for a sitting member of the United States Congress, Patrick is responsible for executive protection operations, protective intelligence, advance work, risk assessment, liaison coordination, and logistical planning. This operational experience provides a practical foundation for developing training programs that address real-world challenges rather than purely theoretical scenarios.

Patrick also serves as the Regional Director for Africa with the Children's International Rescue Foundation, where he has participated in international anti-human-trafficking initiatives, undercover operations, victim recovery efforts, and specialized training for law enforcement and counter-trafficking organizations. His work has included training members of the Zambian Counter-Trafficking Task Force and collaborating with governmental and non-governmental organizations involved in victim rescue and criminal prosecution.

Within the martial arts community, Patrick is a national champion in Filipino martial arts and has extensive experience studying and teaching edged weapons, impact weapons, empty-hand defensive tactics, grappling, controls, and other practical combative disciplines. His instructional experience includes training Army Special Forces personnel, Air Force Security Forces personnel, Human Intelligence and Counterintelligence professionals, Department of Defense advisors, law enforcement officers, corrections personnel, security professionals, and private citizens.

His instructional philosophy emphasizes adaptability, simplicity, and performance under pressure. Rather than teaching isolated techniques, Modern Combative Concepts develops practitioners who understand how individual tactics connect to larger strategies and how those strategies ultimately support the mission objective.

Modern Combative Concepts Training System

Modern Combative Concepts was intentionally designed as a structured and progressive modular system rather than a collection of unrelated courses. Every module contains three levels of instruction: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. As practitioners progress, techniques and concepts become increasingly complex while previously developed skills are reinforced and integrated into new areas of training.

The modules were specifically designed with continuity in mind. Concepts introduced within one module naturally connect to others, allowing students to transition almost seamlessly between striking, clinching, takedowns, grappling, weapons, controls, and other areas of the system. As proficiency increases, the boundaries between individual modules begin to disappear, creating an integrated combative framework in which tactics support strategies and strategies support the mission objective.

Core Training Modules

Attribute Building for Practical Defense

Attribute Building for Practical Defense serves as the foundation of the Modern Combative Concepts training system and is the starting point for most clients. This module develops balance, footwork, pivoting, body positioning, hand configurations, distance management, timing, movement sensitivity, and recognition of common striking angles. Students learn practical defensive strategies while developing an understanding of how to influence and reset the Observe-Orient-Decide-Act (OODA) Loop to disrupt an aggressor's decision-making process and create opportunities to impose their own combative strategy.

Edged Weapons

Edged Weapons training progresses through offensive, defensive, and counteroffensive concepts involving knife-versus-knife, knife-versus-empty-hand, and empty-hand-versus-knife engagements. Training emphasizes weapon deployment and retention while developing the attributes necessary to effectively integrate edged weapons into a broader combative strategy. The progressive structure allows students to advance from fundamental concepts into increasingly complex applications involving resistance, changing positions, and integration with other MCC modules.

Filipino Dirty Boxing

Filipino Dirty Boxing develops close-range striking capabilities beyond the limitations of conventional boxing. Training incorporates punches with elbows, knees, headbutts, limb destructions, positional control, and other combative tools prohibited within traditional boxing competition. As proficiency increases, these concepts integrate naturally with clinch work, takedowns, weapon access, and other close-quarters components of the MCC system.

Counter-Offensive Concepts

Counter-Offensive Concepts focuses on recognizing when a situation has transitioned from a potential threat toward imminent violence and decisively regaining the initiative. Students learn to recognize pre-violence indicators and apply counter-offensive strategies designed to transform an uncontrolled encounter into a manageable situation. Because action is preferable to reaction, students learn to interrupt an aggressor's plan and impose their own combative strategy before the situation progresses further.

Clinch Work

Clinch Work focuses on the critical transition into close-quarters engagement, where distance is reduced and positional control becomes essential. Drawing upon principles from judo and multiple wrestling disciplines, students learn leverage, off-balancing, positioning, and transitional control. These concepts provide a natural bridge into takedowns, disengagement, control strategies, and defensive tool or weapon deployment.

Takedowns

Takedowns teach students to understand the tactical difference between sacrificing a favorable position by following an opponent to the ground and taking an opponent down while maintaining positional dominance. Students develop methods for disrupting balance and controlling the transition while creating opportunities to disengage, establish control, access defensive tools, or remain standing when going to the ground would be strategically undesirable.

Grappling

Grappling focuses on positional control during ground engagements, teaching students how to reverse positions, establish dominance, maintain control, apply submissions, and safely disengage when necessary. Drawing from American wrestling, Japanese jiu-jitsu, and American catch wrestling, this module emphasizes practical application over sport-based competition. Advanced instruction incorporates weapon-based grappling concepts involving firearms, edged weapons, and impact weapons while addressing the unique challenges associated with fighting over weapons on the ground.

Security and Arrest Controls

Security and Arrest Controls focuses on safely closing distance, anticipating kinetic responses, and resetting the OODA Loop to establish control using the minimum force necessary for the safety of everyone involved. Students learn pain compliance, joint manipulation, takedowns, pressure and positional control, methods for safely eliciting compliance, escorting and moving individuals to a designated location, maintaining control during incomplete compliance, and securing individuals against walls, vehicles, or other appropriate control surfaces. Training emphasizes limiting movement to facilitate searches, reduce self-harm, or control outward aggression, with advanced instruction progressing into coordinated partner and team-based control strategies.

Deployment and Retention

Deployment and Retention focuses on the principles governing safe, effective access to firearms and edged weapons under dynamic conditions. Students examine one- and two-handed deployment, space management and distance maintenance, deployment under opposition or direct resistance, muzzle awareness and direction, blade re-angulation as it relates to retention, and the dynamics of different weapon positions, including deployment from concealment. Training also incorporates counter-offensive deployment, teaching students to recognize an identified threat, regain the initiative, and integrate appropriate weapon access into the broader combative strategy.

Vehicle Tactics and Strategies

Vehicle Tactics and Strategies addresses the unique challenges created by confined spaces, restricted movement, and limited visibility within and around vehicles. Students learn strategic positioning, seatbelt management during critical incidents, situational awareness while operating or occupying a vehicle, effective striking and leverage concepts within confined spaces, controlling and disarming weapons presented by an attacker, and accessing and deploying defensive tools while accounting for the vehicle's physical limitations. The module emphasizes adapting movement, positioning, leverage, and decision-making to the realities of vehicle-based encounters.

Impact Weapon Concepts

Impact Weapon Concepts explores how traditional impact weapons, weapons of opportunity, and improvised tools can function as force multipliers far beyond blunt-force striking. Students learn their application in leverage, blocking, takedowns, distance management, positional control, pressure-point application, and joint manipulation, as well as methods for restraining and safely eliciting compliance. The module emphasizes the versatility of impact weapons as tools for creating space, maintaining control, and resolving physical confrontations with an appropriate level of force.

Striking

Striking develops effective offensive and defensive tools across every range, progressing from fundamental punching and kicking to advanced applications involving elbows, knees, headbutts, and concepts drawn from Filipino Dirty Boxing. Students learn how different hand configurations and striking surfaces correspond to specific targets—the concept of matching the appropriate tool to the target like a lock and key. Training also incorporates targeting and basic anatomy to replace generalized striking with deliberate target selection, developing an "aim small, miss small" mindset and a strategic understanding of available target areas while building the ability to transition effectively between close, intermediate, and longer striking ranges.
